Summary

The present
Emilie de la Martiniéres has always fought against her aristocratic background, but after the death of her glamorous, distant mother, she finds herself alone in the world and sole inheritor of her grand childhood home in the south of France。 An old notebook of poems leads her in search of the mysterious and beautiful Sophia, whose tragic love affair changed the course of her family history。 As Emilie unravels the story, she too embarks on her own journey of discovery, realising that the château may provide clues to her own difficult past and finally unlock the future。
The past
London 1943。 A young office clerk, Constance Carruthers, is drafted into the SOE, arriving in occupied Paris during the climax of the conflict。 Separated from her contact in her very first hours in France, she stumbles into the heart of a wealthy family who are caught up in a deadly game of secrets and lies。 Forced to surrender her identity and all ties to her homeland and her beloved husband, Constance finds herself drawn into a complex web of deception, the repercussions of which will affect generations to come。
From the author of the international bestseller, Hothouse Flower, Lucinda Riley’s new novel is a breathtaking and intense story of love, war and, above all, forgiveness。

3。5 stars。 Whilst I enjoyed the historical thread with Connie, an SOE in 1943 France, I didn't appreciate the present day main character Emilie, the French heiress, very much。 Some good twists and a well-paced plot though。 3。5 stars。 Whilst I enjoyed the historical thread with Connie, an SOE in 1943 France, I didn't appreciate the present day main character Emilie, the French heiress, very much。 Some good twists and a well-paced plot though。 。。。more

A page chomper。 Great book with a good balance of plot twisting, scene setting and some super cheesy moments。 Reminded me of the sacrifices people made in the war to fight for our freedom, so all in all a compelling read。 Thank you。

If you loved the seven sisters, you’ll love this one also。 I couldn’t put it down, so well written! Definitely going to read all of Lucinda’s other books

Prima leesvoer voor een mooie zomeravond

I really struggled with the first few chapters but once I started the story in the past I was hooked and could barely put it down。

To naprawdę niesamowita całość! Polecam bardzo serdecznie。 。。。more

great book but didn’t grip me like some of her other novels

While I liked the premise of the story, and always enjoy learning more about WWII, there was just something about this book that just didn’t rate higher than a three…partly due to the sugary, transparent ending。 Two pair of twins? Possible, maybe, but unlikely。 Much of story line was telescoped long ahead of time。 Lacks imagination。 But characters were interesting。

Claudine Van Aanholt

Kerri Jones

Fabulous story set in present day France and another narrative set in France during the Second World War。 The stories converge to reveal secrets buried deep in the history of Nazi regime and the effects of the Parisians of that time。 Chilling。

3。5 stars ⭐️ I enjoyed the book but not as much as other books by the author。 I felt the present time story was too predictable and almost bored me。 However the WWII story of the book was a really nice story。

I really enjoyed the intertwined stories of the women 50 years apart。 The 2nd WW section was really well described, never knowing what will happen from one minute to the next。 Parts of it were extremely tense。 The present day (1999) part had similarities to the war time one two women both naive in their relationships because of their particular situations。 I really enjoyed this lovely novel

Two beautiful stories, interwoven with great care。 Two women with very different lives; Constance, an English spy in WWII Paris and Emelie, a lonely neglected orphan heiress。 While both women live in, what some may call, luxurious circumstances, both also find that war rarely leaves a soul untouched。 And rarely can you escape from the past。While Constance is a stronger character, with a bit more grit, I identified more with Emilie。 Her internal workings I can recognize。 Riley wrote her well。 Con Two beautiful stories, interwoven with great care。 Two women with very different lives; Constance, an English spy in WWII Paris and Emelie, a lonely neglected orphan heiress。 While both women live in, what some may call, luxurious circumstances, both also find that war rarely leaves a soul untouched。 And rarely can you escape from the past。While Constance is a stronger character, with a bit more grit, I identified more with Emilie。 Her internal workings I can recognize。 Riley wrote her well。 Conny's story seems, in comparison a lot more complex。 At certain points I felt her story was unbalanced, with long detailed discriptions of somewhat minor points。 And then major events happened they are not described。 Rather we speed past a few hours, days, and months, and it is only referenced in the past terms。 It felt a but like Riley did not know how to write the hard parts, or felt unconvinced; and they were edited out。That being said, I enjoyed it a lot。 It does end rather neatly, but also I'm left with some question marks。。。 。。。more

I love love love this book!! It had everything i look for in a book。 What i liked the most, was that both the present and the past stories were equally interesting。 When it shifted I would go be sad to leave the story, but I was quickly pleased with the new one。 I definitely recommend this book! Enjoy!
